The world’s first organization

devoted to nations with the smallest economic potential

The Organization for the Smallest Economies in the World (OSEW) is an international non-profit organization, dedicated

to the world's smallest economies, which collectively produced 1% of global GDP (2019). This one percent of the world's GDP was generated by as many as 93 countries, which is nearly half of the world's 193 nations that are full members of the

United Nations

Aneta A. Teperek, having conducted comprehensive research on the world’s smallest economies, identified a need for the establishment of an organization dedicated to providing support and assistance to these economies. The world’s smallest economies are confronted with a plethora of challenges and constraints, predominantly due to the small potential of their economies. They are particularly susceptible to fluctuations in the global economy, including shifts in both global and regional trade trends, largely due to their constrained capacity to diversify economic activities. The limited potential of these economies in both the public and private sectors, including lack of legal and judicial infrastructure, makes them dependent on cooperation with larger economies, often those that are neighboring or historically linked. The participation in globalization inevitably results in the world’s smallest economies being influenced by it, which is not always to their advantage

For instance, they are obligated to comply with international law, irrespective of whether it is in their interests. Their relatively modest economic scale often results in their being overlooked by larger economies and marginalized by global community. This is despite the equal status conferred by United Nations membership, which grants each nation one vote, regardless of its economic, demographic, or territorial size. The world's smallest economies receive only minimal attention from academics, politicians, and world leaders. They are typically mentioned in the media on rare occasions, for example when they are involved in conflicts or when their actions have the potential to impact the interests of global or regional powers. The world becomes aware of their existence during discussions about money laundering or exceptional sport achievements. However, once these episodic events pass, the world quickly forgets about the world's smallest economies again.
